Essesq's Canyon

morgantj

Working with Essesq’s work was a lot of fun. She has a lot of spoken word poetry and being a poet myself I had an appreciation for that. I started of thinking of spoken word arists that I have been listening to lately like William S Burroughs, Black Sifichi, Jack Kerouac, Gil Scott-Heron, etc… I thought about what I was going to do with this. I started off working on this track which tells a story through the movement of sounds. I stopped working on this for a bit thinking that it was way too much my style and that I should try to do something more with her spoken word. So for days I recited her poems in my own voice, recording them, and working with that. While I enjoyed interpreting her poems through my own vocal expressions, each recording ended up being rather short in length. I wanted to give her something more substantial then that for this project. This track which was coming to me naturally from the beginning, it was what I had to do, it was speaking to me so I listened. It was composing itself. Esseq’s vocals accent the journey in various places and I felt contributed almost an important Native Indian tone to it. I will share my spoken versions of her poetry in the near future, but this is the piece that is what was really working for me during this time.
